Yahoo’s goal is to improve their social networking
Last week I talked about how I was going to expand… ok start… covering some of the other social networking services offered by the large companies like Yahoo!, Microsoft, and Google. In that post I covered the growth of Windows Live Spaces, which you can read here.
Yahoo! has had mixed results in the social networking world. They own pieces that have been successful parts of social networking, sites like: Flickr and del.icio.us, have been used all over the internet. Bloggers have latched onto both services with great interest as well as social networking and bookmarking users.
To a lesser extent their Yahoo Answers, a question and answer search engine, has had solid participation, as well their group features which has been around for years.
However, Yahoo 360, which launched in 2005 had been a failure to say the least, a site that attempts to combine a lot of yahoo’s smaller features and looks way too much like Windows Live Spaces, has been a disappoint to the company.
In April, Jeff Weiner, executive vice president of Yahoo’s network division, acknowledged that, “We have to pull it together.”
According to this article on yahoo.com from April, this was not the first time that Yahoo has admitted that they need to improve upon what they had. Apparently Yahoo has been rumored to be in talks with acquiring an already existing social networking website or rebuilding what they have.
I know that I have used Yahoo 360 on a rudimentary level and have not really enjoyed my experience, I felt that the site was clumsy and way too much like Microsoft’s offering. In the coming weeks I will have a better breakdown of the site and will feature it as a review.

Well, for the most part, Yahoo 360 has a following of people who like it, want to continue to use it, and hope Yahoo doesn’t yank it. Mash would probably go over the typical user’s head, being that most users seek out simplicity and ease of use.
Generation X’ers might consider 360 a total flop, when set side to side with other platforms, but for a larger percentage of Boomers, 360 is just fine for them.
There is something for everybody to like or dislike. If 360 is a failure in terms of a projected user count that didn’t materialize, that’s one thing, but if its considered a failure because a few techies don’t like its simplicity, that’s quite another.
