What makes a social networking site valuable to a marketer?

by Kevin on August 7th, 2007

When looking at social networking sites to use to market on I think there are three simple questions that one needs to ask themselves about the site to know if it is going to be effective or not for them.

1) Does the site have a good search feature?

Are you going to be able to search for people to narrow down your target audience by location, interest, or other specific demographics that you desire? This is important because you need to make your time on these sites efficient, without a powerful search feature it is harder to target market.

2) Are their a lot of users that fall into your demographics?

When you do a search is there a fairly good number of users that come up to the various keywords or locations you are searching? You need to make sure that the numbers are their to justify your time. While many people might discount smaller social networking sites, if you can find people within your niche on the site and the numbers are respectable than it is worth devoting your time.

3) Are there groups or forums divided by interest that you target people in?

Groups and forums divided by interest is a huge tool to track down users, if there isn’t anything dividing users up by interest it makes the site less effective for you to use to promote on it.

These are the three things that are on the top of my list of what to look for in a social networking site.
