Using Niche Social Networking Sites as Target Practice

by Kevin on June 7th, 2007

Adweek had a great article about companies using niche social networking sites as target practice for their ad campaigns.

Using these niche sites allows advertisers to go after a target market, albeit significantly smaller than what the larger social networking sites offer. This targeted approach is not only looked at as a sandbox for these companies to test their strategies it is also a condemnation of MySpace’s ability to target their ad campaigns.

MySpace can boast that it has larger numbers of specific audiences, yet agency executives have complained that despite a plethora of personal data submitted by its users, MySpace is unable to effectively use it to target messages to specific topics or interests.

Chad Stoller goes on to say, “If you want to sprinkle some dust on 50 million people, go to MySpace.”

Like I have stated before in earlier entries, if you have a product or service that works with these niche sites they aren’t a bad place to gain a foothold on. The article names some of the niche sites that I have on my list of nice sites here on buzznetworker, but one that was new to me was CafeMom.com.

Cafemom.com is focused on the stay at home mom market, which boosts 40 million potential users. Currently their goal is to be at 2 million members by the end of the year.

Niche sites serve a purpose and they are something that shouldn’t be discounted.

What type of niche sites would you like me to look into more: automotive, sports, stay at home mom, pets, or one you would like to suggest?
