The Regions of Social Networking
One of the interesting facets of social networking is how certain sites are hits, while others are complete misses depending on the different region one lives in.
In this LA Times article there is a breakdown of the some of the demographics of social networking users. Friendster, which seems to have been crushed here in the United States by MySpace has a massive base in the Philippines, where according to the LA Times, “87% of the country’s 8 million Internet users” user Friendster.
Google’s Orkut has a strong base in Brazil and in other nations. Hi-5 has an expanding audience in Brazil, Mexico, France and Portugal. Each credit their growth in these countries to different things such as the sites ability to adapt to these languages to specific use of colors or in some cases the non-use of colors. “A site with a large user base in Thailand, for example, must avoid designs that use the color purple, which is associated with death and morning in Thai society.”
