Buzz Networker - Social Networking

The popularity of social networking sites

by Kevin on June 24th, 2007

In going through various articles that I had bookmarked that I just haven’t gotten around to writing about, I found some stats for the month of March 2007. While we are three months out from this, I still think that information here is useful.

Ceri Kirkland from Compete.com submitted this article to Yahoo News, which has some interesting stats about the trending of certain social networking sites.

Here are some interesting stats that I pulled from the article.

-In a year Bebo.com has tripled their traffic.
-Also in the category of time spent on the site, Bebo.com, has at a 250% increase in the amount of time users spend on the site.
-If you add up the total time MySpace users spent on the site in the month of March it would total 52,214 years.
-Over that same period of time Friendster.com has dropped 50%.

I found it interesting that Classmates was ranked so high. It must’ve really opened things up for them when they opened up their networking model. You used to have to have a premium membership really to make much use of it.

Also intriguing to me is that I haven’t even heard of a third of these sites, and I follow the space pretty closely (although more on the business-oriented sites). It’s amazing how these networks can grow up so big and still not have a lot of visibility outside of their membership.

I used to LOVE myspace but I am getting tired of all the ads, myspace technical problems, slow page load times, all the spammers, the girls showing their t&a… and I think it’s just gone overboard with the whole thing. But I am using it for my JollyGreenGirl.Org and so I guess I have to take the good with the bad. :)

Yeah - they have a BAD problem with their blog code. I tried to post a blog last night and every time I did, I kept getting:

Sorry! an unexpected error has occurred.
This error has been forwarded to MySpace’s technical group.

So I figured it hadn’t posted, right? So I kept trying. Well then I go to my blog and guess what? I posted the same thing like FIVE TIMES!

So I decide to “Manage blog” and go delete the duplicate posts, right?

Sorry! an unexpected error has occurred.
This error has been forwarded to MySpace’s technical group.

Geez… what a piece of crap software. I wish everyone would just get up and move to Facebook.

Yeah their coding leads a lot to be desired, but the amount of people there make it easy to promote easily.

As far as all these other sites, it is amazing the different following each has, be it regionally… or age group… or niche

lol… the only reason I haven’t made my move completely to Facebook is because a lot of my friends still haven’t signed up for Facebook.
