The Blog Improvement Zone Meme

by Kevin on September 24th, 2007

I am going to take a small break from the series I am doing to post this meme. In the past I haven’t really participated in any type of meme before. Dane Morgan though tagged me the other day and I thought his meme was something worth doing.

Here is how he describes the meme:

So what is something you want to improve about your blog or your
blogging? What is it that you just know you could be doing better than
you are? And who are five bloggers who are doing this thing well?

And the instructions on how to do it:

Write a post on your blog answering this question. Give us the good
dirt on what you want to improve. Then link to three to five bloggers
who you feel are doing this thing well already. Be sure to visit them
and let them know you tagged them, and be sure to send a trackback to
this post. If you were tagged by someone else who participated in this
meme, you could send the trackback to them instead, or even send
trackbacks to both.

I thought this was something I needed to do because I feel like I have lost a little bit of focus on my blogs lately, writing four blogs five times a week mixed with grad school and a real job has kind of taken a toll on me. I am thinking about dropping down to just this blog and my personal blog so I can focus on two very different things that I enjoy.

Okay enough rambling about my current blogging status… In looking at my blog I think I do a poor job of writing definitive lists, posts that can act as an anchor for my blog and draw a lot of traffic. That is something I want to improve on. Five bloggers that I think do this very well are:

Aaron Brazell over at Technosailor- He just printed a post 10 Things You Need to Know About Wordpress 2.3… Timely, authoritative, and well done… This is something about Aaron that I really respect and admire.

Common Sense PR by Eric Eggerston
- Eric also posts great lists and lays them out really well, I need to use pictures and vary my post layouts like he does.

Onemansgoal by Byran Clark- One thing that I like about Bryan’s blog is the way he deploys lists when talking about certain topics. He backs up his reasons why he supports things pretty well. His use of lists are really effective.

Darlene at Interview Chatter- Darlene is also very effective in using lists, in her recent series on LinkedIn she used lists in numerous posts. Also I like how she creates a list of her own posts that are the current most popular on her blog.

Dennis Plucinik at self titled blog- Dennis assembled a list of photoshop tutorials in a graphical manner that made the front page of del.icio.us and did pretty well on other social bookmarking websites. It led to a massive spike in traffic because this list was such a useful and handy tool.

I recommend checking out all the blogs here, some you may already know, some you don’t but they are all worthwhile reads.

Tomorrow: Back on track with the social networking half hour marketing plan.

    Hi Kevin,

Thanks for picking this up and running with it. Lists are something I’ve never really done at all, every time I see some one mention them, and every time I see how effective they can be I tell myself I have to do some lists, but I never seem to actually follow through on it.

I see so many people doing lists effectively but it never pops into my head when I write. I think I am just a tad bit too long winded.

Thanks for the mention! I’m glad you enjoy my lists. I find that it’s the simplest and most easily scannable way to create an informative post.

Bloggers are scanners, so you want to make the content easy to read. Lists are very effective!
