Social Networking Talk at Cannes

by Kevin on May 29th, 2007

I just returned home from the Cannes Film Festival and boy are my arms tired. (Sorry I always wanted to use that.)

While I was at Cannes in a business capacity other than dealing with social networking, there was still a ton of talk about social networking websites and how they are used. There were multiple meetings that I was involved in where MySpace.com was brought up, each time it was talked about in a slightly different way.

1) The Horror Distributor- Brain Damage Films, a horror distribution company based out of Arizona, uses a character as their figure head. The character of Brain Damage, interacts with their fans, and answers any questions that they send in. They started a MySpace page as an additional marketing tool, where they can reach out and share trailers as well as drive traffic to their site which also acts as a storefront. Possessing a large mailing list with loyal fans, they viewed MySpace as another way that people would stumble on their content, as well as providing another way for their fans to communicate with them.

2) The Filmmaker- A filmmaker and his producers attended the Cannes Film Festival and attacked it guerrilla style, trying to drum up interest in their docudrama “Will the Real Pimps and Hos Please Stand Up!” On their business cards they listed their MySpace page as one of their websites. While the film is presently unsigned, they have embarked upon creating a college speaking tour about the movie and have named MySpace and Facebook as two avenues to create grass root support of their film.

3) The UK Distributor- One of the films that we had brought with us to Cannes had a large interest from a UK distributor. In our meeting with them one of the things that was discussed was using social networking to build a word of mouth before the release of the film in art house cinemas.

Three different types of companies, people, and subject matter yet they all had a presence on social networking websites, which I found interesting.
