Mixxing It Up
In the last two weeks I have begun to take time out and target mixx.com a little bit more.
Over the last couple of months I have seen multiple posts hailing the importance of mixx:

7 Reasons Why Mixx is Better Than Digg
Mixx Gets Credibility Boost From NY Times
I added the add to mixx! button to my firefox browser and decided to take the extra step and submit stories that I found interesting in my RSS feeds. I wanted to make sure that I was submitting a lot of good content that was a cross section of my interests, especially before I start adding friends or really trying to use it to drive traffic.
After submitting quality stories I began to join groups in the niches that I frequent and also some general interest groups that were popular on the site. Also I targeted some key mixxers, adding some of their friends.
What have I learned after the first two week?
The community is nice and fun to be in- I have to say the people on the site have been fun to engage with in comments and most people have been really friendly. They are quick to vote up stories and are quick to help you out.
I like the setup better than digg- Especially the groups function.
You can build credibility fast- Just by adding mixx into my daily routine I have been able to quickly build up karma points and a little bit of a standing in the community.
You can really target people in specific niches- Tagging, categories, and groups allow you to really target people that would potentially be interested in specific stories.
The major drawback-
Where is the traffic?- While people are quick to vote stories up they aren’t necessarily clicking through to the actual blogs. I submitted a couple of my stories as well as other posts. I would see my stories get voted up and do well but the actual clicks to my site on the stories didn’t even match the votes.
I am going to continue to use mixx.com because I enjoy the community but it isn’t going to be a site the recommend to clients or friends to help out their blogs or sites.
What do you think of mixx?

Mixx is not for traffic yet, at least not for massive front page traffic. While testing I found out that it’s such a good site that I just stayed and used it manifold other ways. Now I already have a really active group on Mixx: SEO 2.0 which I read first, even before Sphinn.
Mixx is just too good to fail while Digg will be sold to the highest corporate bidder and maybe become even worse.

Nice post! The only part of what you said that I would take issue with is that regarding traffic. While admittedly, I don’t submit my own content that often; I have been seeing substantial increases in the actual votes-visits ratio over the past few months.
While Mixx is in no rush to attract spammers, the site does hold the potential to deliver traffic if the topic is of high-interest to the community.

Hey guys,
Well, here is the deal, Social Media is not about gaining traffic. “REALITY CHECK” There are marketers and SEO enthusiasts who would dis-agree, and that’s fine. To each his own. Mixx for me is not about “Hey let’s see how many people I can get to read my blog” If your content is good on your blog, then, people will read it. Mixx is about content sharing. Spammers will quickly be shown the door and have thier keys taken away.
The community is awesome. The layout is 100% better then Digg. (If you watch you will see where Digg is taking ideas from Mixx and integrating them into Digg)
Now here is the other side of the coin. Mixx, while still in it’s infancy has better growth numbers then Digg did at the time of it’s launch. So, that being said, if Mixx continues on it’s current growth path, has the extreme potential to be a big Social Media player. Mixx is a site to keep an eye on, that’s for sure.

Hey Jay,
I love the community on there and I really have been participating since joining. I guess I just don’t get the point of voting up stories if people aren’t actually reading them.
In looking at some of the stuff I have submitted (yes I will submit some of my own content, I know.. I know) I might have 20+ votes and only a handful of views.
However, with that being said, I enjoy spending time on there. I am finding that I am submitting more to their than I have any other social media site except for stumbleupon…
