Buzz Networker - Social Networking

Microsoft and Lotus Jostle with Social Networking Backbones

by Kevin on July 12th, 2007

As social networking has taken over the halls of school and colleges, businesses have begun to position themselves to deploy their own social networking websites.

IBM and Microsoft have been two companies actively designing software to deploy for corporations to create their own social networks. According to a recent PC World article, both behemoths have pushed out their initial releases. Blogs, wikis, chat tools, tag clouds, bookmark sharing, rss feed aggregation, and specific user profiles are features that you can find, albeit it not all in one… yet.

Microsoft announced that they are committed to developing over 100 applications for social networking over the next year.

So the question is what does this mean for us?

-Understanding how to get around and use social networking websites to their fullest potential is important. As more companies implement social networking sites internally or externally your knowledge and expertise becomes that much more valuable.

-If you know the systems and understand their features you can maximize your usage of them. This will allow to you to get the most out of the new networks being created. You would be surprised how many people I have had message me asking me what an rss feed is or what tagging is.

By taking the time to immerse yourself in the features now you can gain a knowledge and learn how to use it appropriately. Dive into these social networking websites, learn their features, experiment and see what is different, what is common, and what you like and don’t like.

As this technology becomes more embedded into our lives we have an opportunity to stand on the cutting edge.
