Facebook Applications, The New Spam Part 4

by Kevin on January 16th, 2008

This is part of my ongoing quest to examine all the various Facebook Applications I get invited to. My goal is to review them all and have zero impending invites.

My Purity Test- (5 invites)

What they say: How pure do your friends really think you are? Do they think you’re pure like an angel or naughty like the devil? What about the random person you just met, are they really as pure as they made you think?

With My Purity Test, you can take the purity test, choose whether to reveal your score or not, see your friends’ purity scores and rate your friends on what you think of their purity.

What I say: I already know where I am going to come out with this I don’t need to see which of my friends are as morally corrupt as I am.

Instant Messaging- (2 invites)

What they say: Get The Original Instant Messaging application for Facebook

No installation required
No stalkers! Only your friends can IM you
Bug-free flash login
Friendly Demo Videos to make it easy

What I say: Yeah another way for people to get ahold of me, no thank you. I don’t need another instant messaging application and I don’t want to give people another way to nag me.

My Greeting Cards- (1 invite)

What they say: Send and receive virtual gift cards! Let your friends and family know that you are thinking of them. New cards are available daily.

What I say: Meh, I don’t like sending real greeting cards, virtual greeting cards reek of even more laziness.

causes

Causes- (12 invites)

What they say: Make a difference, on Facebook.

Causes on Facebook lets you start and join the causes you care about. Donations to causes can benefit over a million registered 501(c)(3) nonprofits and major presidential campaigns.

What I say: I like the fact that this brings charity and giving into the fold, but I don’t know that I need to publicly let people know how much I have donated and to what causes.

iPredict- (1 invite)

What they say: Make a prediction and let your friends be the judge. With iPredict you share predictions with the world and vote on friends’ predictions. Tell them “My fake id will work this weekend,” “Jane will drop Tom like a bad habit,” “Lohan is going to jail.” Take a stand on your profile now!

What I say: I predict that this application sucks donkey balls…

Poke Pro- (1 invite)

What they say: Take poking further: add 40+ actions to your profile, including ‘Tickle Him!’, ‘Kiss Her!’, ‘Buy Beer For Them!’ and more - or make your own. PLUS give and receive free Presents, and see who your ‘poke buddies’ are

What I say: I hate the poke feature on facebook, there really isn’t a point to it. To add more things to doesn’t make it any more appealing.

My Heritage- (2 invites)

What they say: They just have a FAQ about the application and no description. Basically you can put flags on your page that shows your heritage.

What I say: I think my giant Irish and Italian flags mixed together tattoo that covers my right arm tells you my heritage, why do I need this app? Okay I don’t have the tattoo but that story is no dumber than the idea behind this application.

Youtube Faves- (1 invite)

What they say: This application allows you to show the favorite youtube videos of a user you picked.

What I say:Combining social media is smart, this is actually a decent application.

Mardi Gras- (4 invites)

What they say: Join the party! It’s Mardi Gras on the book! Invite friends to the party and distribute your beads wisely!

What I say: When I hear Mardi Gras I think of New Orleans and when I think of New Orleans I think of hurricanes, a high murder rate, and very little fun. So why would I want to think about that stuff on a daily basis by adding this application?

Addicted to the Office- (1 invite)

What they say: Watch The Office? Show your favorite characters, pictures & quotes on your profile. Find out which friends watch the show, and chat with others who watch The Office.

What I say: I like The Office and I think this is a cute and fun idea. It doesn’t add value or anything like that but sometimes that is okay.
