Deploying Ning! for School Wide Social Networking

by Kevin on July 26th, 2007

Ning! is a website I have been keeping my eye on, as it allows the user to create their own social networking websites. I am planning on reviewing it shortly, I have spent a little more time on it so I can also write up the most effective way to use the site.

In looking into Ning! I found this article about people deploying it and using it as a central social networking site for their school. Ning! allows teachers to create a network and befriend all the students within the network, in what would be a closed network.

The idea of creating a closed network for your business or educational institution is something that I find appealing about this setup. Some teachers and business professionals have begun to setup MySpace or Facebook profiles to communicate with their students or employees, which is dangerous because of the personal nature of these sites. You move into a moral grey area with doing something like that, especially if you are involved in the education field.

Using Ning! though seems like a good solution for this problem especially if it centrally administered by the school. The network is private, you can engage your students or employees with the type of technology they are using in their personal life, and it is an inventive way to communicate with people network wide.

I am looking forward to writing a full review on this website, which will be up in a few weeks.

I have created several networks on Ning and find it
very easy to use, both as a developer and end user.

At first, it seems redundent to have multiple profile pages as you join different networks. But once you figure out the concept, it is a nice idea.

In an academic environment, a student could be in multiples classes (networks), have their main profile page, and a mini profile page for each class (network) that they are enrolled in.

Ning is a perfect applications for this!
