Buzz Networker - Social Networking

An overlooked application of the social web

by Kevin on November 27th, 2007

On a day to day basis, okay well recently on a two times a week basis, I cover how to use social networking to promote your various projects. One of the things I have overlooked about the social web is how great of a tool it is to get answers and to find experts.

Today I needed a little help on a resume and I asked friends on a social networking site if anyone knew a good resume expert. It just so happens that one of my friends is a resume expert, something I didn’t know about them.

Des Walsh spoke at Blog World Expo on a panel about international business and how to penetrate those markets. When asked by one of the audience members  about how to find out what sites to use to penetrate specific markets Des offered up a rather simple response, “Do you use LinkedIn? Just post a question on there.”

How many times on a daily basis do you have a question that you want significant feedback on? You spend time googling the answer, or perhaps e-mailing people you know to see if they can direct you in the right way. This is a waste of time, you could just reach out to your network of contacts via LinkedIn, Facebook, or numerous other social networking sites and found an experts opinion.

Now this is not a one way street, you should participate in these conversations and help use your expertise to answer the questions of your fellow users. Remember this is the social web… Heck, I shouldn’t be telling you that. I need to tell myself, this is the social web and you need to remember to participate in the conversation, not just try and attempt to create one.

    Spot on.

I, too, have used experts on the social nets to help me with problems. I am always astounded by how willing they are, and flattered to be asked.
