An Interesting New Approach to Social Networking
Last Tuesday, Fatdoor.com launched, a social networking site that allows people to connect to their local neighbors and businesses. PC World covered their launch in this article, the social network is currently open to residents of Silicon Valley only presently.
In reading the article I am intrigued by the approach they are taking with the site, basically it uses a virtual earth map where users go and claim their business or home. They create profiles around these and allow people within in their neighborhood to look at them and find what services they offer, what clubs they are in or find what events are going on locally.
The overall goal is to foster a community for each neighborhood where people can communicate and regulate content that is placed on the site, like Wikipedia. With Bill Harris the former CEO of PayPal and Intuit on board as the chairman of the company, it has some heavy hitters attached to the project.
I think this is an interesting approach and as far as businesses go this is a great way to touch people locally. One thing I am a little concerned about is the setup from a security point of view, will people essentially know where you live? What is considered a neighborhood and from how far out can people see your information?
This is a site that I believe has a lot of potential, I will keep my eyes out for any other news and reviews about it as it grows. I have signed up for it and will attempt to wrap my head around it a little bit more as it grows.

I don’t see anything new here. It is pretty much zip-code based networking. Several other social networking sites with this functionality.
Like you rightly pointed out, people will have apprehensions about privacy and security (since your address would get revealed).

Kiran,
Sp you have been on there? Is it nothing more than a search by zip code setup?

I read this article with great interest, and perhaps a little disappointment because I have been in the beginning stages of creating a site like this myself. While I don’t have CEOs of PayPal or Intuit behind me, my partner and I are enthusiastic to find that our idea does exist, and certainly think there will be room for 2 in this game.
