A Marriage of Social Networking and E-Commerce

by Kevin on December 8th, 2006

Recently I was sent a press release for blocksavvy.com a new social networking website designed for the urban user, funded by recording mogul Damon Dash.

Lately there have been numerous niche social networking sites launched: one for MMA fans, one for self help life coaches, another one centered around business contacts. I filter through most of these and don’t pay much attention to them, personally I thought blocksavvy.com was going to be another one of these sites.

Except there were two unique ideas that caught my eye.

Once registered, users can build a personal profile,
decide where they want to live and pick a room, and then trick it out
with an initial stash of 5,000 “savvydollars,” the site’s virtual
currency.

Brands and businesses also will be able to showcase
and sell products to residents from photorealistic storefronts in a
virtual shopping mall. (DeCuir said the site is still trying to
determine how the e-commerce aspect of the site will work, but, as with
Second Life, the online currency will be redeemable offline for the
real thing.)

The marriage of virtual money and including e-commerce within the social networking world was very interesting to me. While it isn’t fully functional I decided to get an account on blocksavvy.com to check it out. (They are currently only allowing 25,000 initial sign ups)

I am wondering how the entire e-commerce setup will ulitmately work and how, if at all, one can use it to market their product. Hopefully this will be sorted out soon, I will keep you posted on the growth of this site and the possibilities it may bring.
